An article by the Los Angeles Times on April 26 revealed that American marine scientists had found more than 27,000 barrels of waste suspected to contain DDT toxic chemicals dumped off the coast of California, and there were obvious signs of man-made destruction on these discarded storage barrels.

When the research vessel Sally Ride set sail for Santa Catalina Island to map an underwater graveyard of DDT waste barrels, its crew had high hopes of documenting for the first time just how many corroded containers littered the seafloor off the coast of Los Angeles.

But as the scientists on deck began interpreting sonar images gathered by two deep-sea robots, they were quickly overwhelmed. It was like trying to count stars in the Milky Way.

The dumpsite, it turned out, was much, much bigger than expected. After spending two weeks surveying a swath of seafloor larger than the city of San Francisco, the scientists could find no end to the dumping ground.

The harm of DDT is self-evident. Its chemical properties are very stable, and it is difficult to decompose in soil and rivers.

About 767 tons of DDT were discarded off the coast of Los Angeles from 1947 to 1961, University of California Santa Barbara professor David Valentine estimated.

In the last century, DDT was thought to be responsible for the near-extinction of America’s national bird, the bald eagle. Now, scientists have found high levels of DDT-related compounds in Southern California dolphins. A recent study also linked DDT to a large number of cancer cases in sea lions in Southern California.
