Dear Brooklyn Tech Alum:
Tech needs your help today, now more than ever. A half dozen hearings will be held this April and May about dumping the test and substituting subjective criteria for deciding who is admitted. The first such hearing is this Thursday, April 11th at 6:30 pm at Queens Borough Hall, 120-55 Queens Blvd. It’s important that we have a good turnout for this first hearing. We are gathering at 5:30 pm to rally support for keeping the test.
Here is a leaflet about the hearing. Also, please watch this video of my remarks at Brooklyn Tech’s homecoming. I explain that Tech has been and continues to be a school for the children of working, immigrant and low-income families. I also explain that for almost 20 years – from 1976 to 1994 – a majority of Tech’sstudent body was black and Latino. They were admitted, like everyone else, because of their performance on the test. Since then, the city eliminated gifted and talented classes and enriched programs like SP from the schools serving these communities. And, as a result, today these communities are significantly under-represented at Tech and the other specialized schools.
Some politicians would rather scapegoat the test than do the necessary hard work of improving our schools so every community can succeed on the test. We also know that eliminating the test will not improve the quality of the education taking place in our elementary and middle schools.
Please rally for Tech. Support the test and support improving the quality of ourschools. See you on Thursday, April 11th.
Sincerely,
Larry Cary ‘70
